Nordic Education Platform

A cross-border learning platform connecting schools across Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. It serves as a media library for Nordic films and documentaries with pedagogical materials, and hosts a Friend Class feature that lets schools find partner classes in other countries for joint projects. We built reporting tools for admins, Excel data export, a multi-language RTE with inline word translation, and a moderated comments system.
Challenges
Multi-language RTE with inline word translation
Editors needed to mark individual words in rich text and associate them with translations in other Nordic languages โ not just switch the whole document language. We built a custom Umbraco RTE plugin that lets editors select a word, pick its meaning, and attach translations that render as interactive tooltips for students.
Cross-border school matching
The Friend Class feature needed to match schools across three countries based on age group, subject interest, and availability. We designed the matching logic to be configurable from the back-office so coordinators could adjust criteria without code changes.
Moderated community comments at scale
Allowing students to communicate inside the portal required a comments system that worked across content types and gave admins a central dashboard to review, approve, and remove content โ without building a separate moderation application.
Our approach
Reporting and data export
Built the admin reporting features for backoffice users โ usage stats, content metrics, and Excel data export. Added custom plugin infrastructure to keep future reporting additions modular.
Multi-language RTE with word translation
Extended the Umbraco RTE with a custom plugin that lets editors select individual words, assign meanings, and attach translations in other Nordic languages. The translations render as interactive tooltips in the student-facing interface.
Friend Class matching system
Built the cross-border school matching feature with configurable criteria (age group, subject, availability). Coordinators manage matching parameters from the back-office; the system surfaces compatible classes across Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
Comments system and moderation
Delivered the comments plugin that works across all content types on the platform, with a centralized moderation dashboard for admins to review, approve, and remove content. Included notification flows for flagged content.
Result
Live media library and cross-border networking platform serving primary and secondary schools across three Nordic countries.
